Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu was the youngest daughter of D.K. Onwenu, a notable Nigerian educationist and politician. Her early life was marked by tragedy when she lost her father at the age of four, a loss that influenced her determination and drive. Onwenu pursued her education zealously, attending Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA, where she earned a degree in International Relations and Communication. She later completed her Master’s degree in Media Studies at The New School for Social Research in New York City.

Career in Journalism

Onwenu’s career began in journalism, where she worked as a news correspondent for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Her investigative documentary, Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches, exposed corruption in Nigeria’s oil industry and brought her national acclaim. This documentary showcased her dedication to truth and justice, qualities that would spread throughout her diverse career.

Music Career

Transitioning from journalism to music, Onwenu released her debut album, For the Love of You, in 1981. Her unique blend of African rhythms, contemporary sounds, and soulful voice won her a massive following for years. She was instrumental in popularizing Nigerian music globally, with hit songs like Ekwe, One Love, and You and I. Her music is known for carrying messages of love, unity, and social justice, reflecting her deep commitment to societal issues.

Her performances in movies such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Mothers-in-Law showcased just how versatile and talented she was as an actress. In 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
