Tolu Coker transformed the runway into a vibrant scene of familial warmth and cultural pride with her Fall 2024 ready-to-wear presentation. The young British-Nigerian designer immersed the audience in the tradition of “Sunday Best,” drawing inspiration from the polished style and celebratory spirit found in African households.
Coker’s presentation went beyond a traditional fashion show, creating a multisensory experience that resonated deeply with those familiar with the African diaspora. A mother-like figure, dressed in traditional Nigerian attire, set the scene with sweeping gestures and affectionate scoldings, reminiscent of preparations for a special occasion.
“The singing, the fervor…these are everyday moments in my life,” Coker explained backstage. “It’s a celebration of overcoming challenges, a testament to the resilience of immigrants everywhere.”
The collection itself was an ode to polished elegance. Oxblood leather jackets, double-breasted coat dresses, and pleated miniskirts accented with colorful neckties evoked the refined style associated with Sunday church services. Indigo denim ensembles added a touch of contemporary cool.
