Honoured annually on the 25th of May, Africa Day is celebrated in respect to the array of rich cultures, histories, and traditions that define the African continent. This significant occasion isn’t only a celebration of Africa’s past and continuous achievements but also a day set apart to call for unity, solidarity, and progress across the continent. As such, a special day has been set aside to honour Africa Day, and we pay respect to the resilient spirit of the African people whose journey has been marked by triumphs, challenges, and strength that come from their unwavering resolution.

Africa Day is a celebration of diversity, highlighting the numerous cultures, languages, and traditions that coexist in harmony across the continent. From the vibrant rhythms of West African drumming to the elaborate beadwork of East Africa and the intriguing art of storytelling in Southern Africa, Africa’s cultural collection is one that reflects both the diversity and beauty of its people.

In addition, Africa Day presents an opportunity to reflect on the continent’s progress and challenges and our commitment to advancing peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. From fighting poverty and inequality to solving environmental crises and promoting gender equality, African nations continue to work collaboratively to overcome shared obstacles and build a brighter future for all.

As we mark Africa Day and remember Africa’s past achievements, we celebrate our present heroes who are making the continent proud in every aspect of life. Benedict Okey Oramah (President, Afrexim Bank)

He joined Afreximbank in 1994 and progressively rose through the ranks, assuming the presidency in September 2015. Akinwumi Adesina (President, African Development Bank)

Sarkodie burst onto the music scene in 2009 with his debut album Makye, which quickly established him as a formidable talent. Dubbed “Prince and Future of Afrobeats” Rema is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper who has rapidly risen to prominence in the global music scene. Coming onto the scene in 2019 with his self-titled debut EP, Rema has become one of the leading figures in the Afrobeat genre, known for his unique sound and charismatic presence.

Rema’s journey began in Benin City, Nigeria, where his talent was discovered by D’Prince, the CEO of Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. His debut single, Iron Man, caught international attention when it appeared on former U.S. President Barack Obama’s summer playlist in 2019. Jade first gained widespread recognition with her debut feature film, Isoken (2017). The romantic comedy, which she wrote and directed, was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple awards, including the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Movie West Africa. Isoken tackled themes of cultural expectations, family pressure, and love, resonating deeply with audiences both in Nigeria and abroad.

Kunle Afolayan 

Kunle Afolayan, a renowned Nigerian filmmaker, has significantly impacted the global film industry with his exceptional storytelling and production skills. Born on the 30th of September, 1974, in Lagos, Nigeria, Afolayan is the son of the late Ade Love, a prominent Nigerian theatre and film director. This artistic lineage inspired Afolayan to pursue a career in filmmaking, leading him to study at the New York Film Academy.

Afolayan’s breakthrough came with his 2006 film, Irapada, a supernatural thriller that received critical acclaim and set the tone for his future works. He continued to garner attention with The Figurine (2009), a film that won five major awards at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and established him as a key player in Nollywood, Nigeria’s burgeoning film industry.

In 2014, Afolayan directed October 1, a historical drama set on the eve of Nigeria’s independence. The film was widely praised for its production quality, narrative depth, and historical significance, earning him several awards, including the AMAA for Best Director. Widely known as RMD, Richard Mofe-Damijo is a renowned Nigerian actor, producer, and lawyer whose contributions to Nollywood have made him a household name across Africa. Born on the 6th of July, 1961, in Delta State, Nigeria, RMD began his career in entertainment as a journalist and publisher before transitioning to acting.

RMD’s breakthrough came in the 1990s with his performance in the popular TV soap opera Ripples, which established him as one of Nollywood’s leading actors. His charismatic screen presence and exceptional acting skills quickly earned him a loyal fan base. Over the years, he has starred in numerous successful films and television series, including Out of BoundsHostagesScores to Settle, and Keeping Faith. His versatility in portraying diverse characters has made him a standout performer in the industry.

In addition to acting, RMD has made significant contributions behind the scenes. He produced and starred in the critically acclaimed film Out of Bounds (1997), which he also co-wrote. Richard Mofe-Damijo continues to be a prominent figure in Nollywood, inspiring a new generation of actors and filmmakers. His enduring legacy was recently celebrated at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) as he became the recipient of the “Industry Merit Award” for his contributions to the cultural and artistic landscape of Nigeria and Africa at large.


Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua, born on the 15th of October, 1989, is a professional boxer of Nigerian descent who has gained international acclaim for his achievements in the heavyweight division. Known for his athletic prowess, formidable punching power, and commendable sportsmanship, Joshua’s career is marked by several notable accomplishments.

Joshua’s boxing journey began in earnest when he started training at the age of 18. His amateur career saw rapid success, culminating in a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the super-heavyweight category, which catapulted him into the professional arena. He made his professional debut in October 2013 and quickly became a dominant force in the heavyweight division.

Joshua captured his first world title in April 2016 by defeating Charles Martin for the IBF heavyweight title. One of the hottest footballing talent export from Nigeria and Africa, Victor is a professional footballer known for his remarkable talent as a forward. His journey from the streets of Lagos to becoming one of the most sought-after strikers in European football is nothing short of inspirational.

Osimhen’s breakthrough came when he starred in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, leading Nigeria to victory and winning the Golden Boot with 10 goals. His goalscoring prowess earned him the “Best Striker Award”, “Capocannoniere”, and eventually the CAF “African Footballer of the Year” all in the year 2023.

Tobi Amusan

A serial record-breaker, Tobi Amusan has proven herself to be a force to reckon with in the track and field event. Amusan specialises in the 100-meter hurdles, and her journey to the pinnacle of hurdling is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and exceptional talent.

Amusan first came into the limelight at the 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships, where she won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles. Her success continued at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Poland, where she clinched another gold, establishing herself as a rising star in athletics.

In 2017, Amusan’s career took a significant leap forward when she won the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, representing the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She also secured gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, further cementing her status as a leading hurdler.

Her accolades continued to pile up as she won the gold medal at the 2018 African Championships and the 2019 All-Africa Games. One of her most significant achievements came in 2021, when she won the Diamond League title in Zurich, becoming the first Nigerian to do so in the 100-meter hurdles.

One of which came at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles, setting a new world record with a time of 12.12 seconds in the semifinals and then winning the final with a time of 12.06 seconds (though wind-assisted). This historic feat made her the first Nigerian to win a world title in any athletics event.

Her most recent feat came at the 2024 inaugural Jamaica Athletics invitational held in Kingston where she ran a world-leading 12.40 seconds (0.9m\s) to win the 100-meter hurdles.

David Tlale

Born on the 29th of January, 1975, in Vosloorus, Johannesburg, Tlale’s journey into the fashion world began after he studied at the Vaal University of Technology. His exceptional talent quickly garnered attention, and he soon became a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry.

Tlale’s breakthrough came in 2003 when he won the Elle New Talent Competition, which provided a platform to showcase his unique designs. His work is characterised by bold colours, intricate detailing, and a distinctive fusion of traditional African aesthetics with modern fashion trends. This combination has made his collections stand out on both local and international runways.

One of Tlale’s significant achievements was becoming the first South African designer to showcase a solo collection at the New York Fashion Week in 2012. This milestone not only elevated his brand but also brought global recognition to South African fashion. He has also presented his collections at prestigious events like Paris Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, further cementing his reputation as a global fashion icon.

Odio Oseni

Odio Oseni, known by her brand name Odio Mimonet is a celebrated Nigerian fashion designer, has made a significant impact on the African and global fashion scenes with her colourful and vibrant designs. Born and raised in Nigeria, Oseni developed a deep appreciation for art and fashion from an early age. She studied at the prestigious Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and later honed her skills at the Instituto Marangoni in Milan, Italy, one of the world’s leading fashion schools.

In 1995, Oseni launched her fashion label, Odio Mimonet, which quickly gathered attention for its unique fusion of African aesthetics and contemporary styles. Her designs are characterised by their bold use of colours, intricate patterns, and elaborate embroidery, often infusing traditional African textiles and techniques. Oseni’s work celebrates African heritage while appealing to a modern, global audience.

Mokubung launched Mantsho, meaning “Black is Beautiful”, in Sesotho in 2004. One of Mokubung’s significant milestones came in 2019 when she became the first African designer to collaborate with global retail giant H&M. The Mantsho x H&M collection featured an array of stunning pieces, from flowing dresses to statement accessories, and was celebrated for its authentic representation of African culture.
